Profile of the companion synod relationship - 5L La Crosse Area Synod / Ethiopia / Central Synod
Our Role in Global Mission

We send and receive visitors to deepen the relationship between our two churches. We share the experiences of these trips and the travelers coming to our synod, allowing our members to further their understanding of the global church.

Component(s) of our relationship

Delegations to the Central Synod
Delegations from our synod have traveled to the Central Synod every 3-4 years since the first trip in 1997, led by Bishop April Ulring Larson. Bishop Jim Arends led the most recent delegation in 2011 for the 50th anniversary of the Central Synod.

Teaching Pastors
Pastors (both men and women) from our synod have gone over every year since 2002 to teach classes for half a semester at the Nekemte Christian Education College.

Guests come to learn
Once the President of the Central Synod and now President of the EECMY, Wakseyoum Idossa Negeri has visited here several times. He took classes at a seminary in Chicago and also completed his CPE residency at a local medical center.

Guests to our Synod Assembly
We welcome guests from the Central Synod, usually every other year their synod president comes to our synod assembly.

Books
Everytime someone visits the Central Synod from our synod books are taken to supplement the Nekemte Christian Education College library, and as resources for their new pastors while in school and when they are in a parish.

Teacher Evangelist from the Central Synod
Then Executive Secretary of the Central Synod, Fekadu Begna spent 4 months in our synod in early 2008. He preached in several area congregations and led many Bible studies and workshops during his time here.

Medical Needs
In 2009 Bishop Jim Arends and his wife, Lynn, visited for the 50th Anniversary of the EECMY. Lynn Arends then stayed for a month researching the medical needs in the Central Synod.

Supporting Health Clinics
In 2009, as a result of Lynn Arends' visit, our synod began the Hundred for Health Campaign to support health clinics in Bakko and Nekemte. It takes approximately $50 a day to keep each clinic functioning, $100 per day for both.

Scholarships
Scholarships have been sent from our synod several times to assist primarily female seminary students in the Central Synod.
