Profile of the companion synod relationship - 6A Southeast Michigan Synod / Jordan / Palestine /
Our Role in Global Mission

The Southeast Michigan Synod has a deep partnership with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL). In accompanying each other we support the Peace Not Walls effort of the ELCA.

Component(s) of our relationship

Accompaniment
Over 100 people from the Southeast Michigan Synod have visited the ELCJHL. Visitors learn the stories of Palestinian and Palestinian Christians and share stories of our sisters and brothers who live under the occupation.

Youth Visits
Regular delegations of youth from the Southeast Michigan Synod have visit the ELCJHL and the synod has recevied visitors from the ELCJHL. Youth develop deep and lasting relationships. These visits impact courses of study and career choices.

Advocacy
Members of the synod take seriously the call to advocate for a political solution that will result in peace, security, justice and opportunities for both Palestinians and Israelis. Advocacy includes visits to Capital Hill through www.cmep.org.

Hope
Signs of hope for people living under the occupation are minimal but people from the Southeast Michigan Synod discover hope from sisters and brothers who hope in what they can not yet see. This shared hope encourages the faith of both partners.

Trips
Because the synod has made numerous trips to Israel and Palestine, experience and resources can be shared with others who are planning such trips. We encourage all members of the ELCA to consider a trip that will include visits with ELCA partners.

Ecumenical Accompaniment Program.
Five members of the synod have participated in the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel. Each spent three months accompanying Palestinians and Israelis who are working for justice, an end to the occupation and a political solutio
