Profile of the companion synod relationship - 9E Florida-Bahamas Synod / Haiti /
|
| Our Role in Global Mission |
|
| The Florida-Bahamas Synod has been actively walking with the Lutheran Church of Haiti before it became a nationally recognized church of the country of Haiti. It is a relationship of mutual respect, valuing the culture and gifts of each other. |
|
| Component(s) of our relationship |
|
Theological Training As Eglise Lutherienne d'Haiti is a very young church, pastors and lay leaders of the Florida Bahamas Synod have traveled to Haiti to lead and share in theological study with the pastors and lay leaders of Eglise Lutherienne d'Haiti for several years.
Seminary Scholarships/Internships Funding for the seminary study of Rev. Joseph Livenson Lauvanus, president of Eglise Lutherienne d'Haiti [ELH] was provided by the F-B Synod through our companion relationship. It is a goal to continue to nurture future pastors as identified by ELH
Deacon Training Support With only 4 pastors for 12 congregations of ELH, the Florida Bahamas Synod supports lay leader deacon training for congregations of ELH. Support includes both financial support for resources, as well as visits by FBS pastors to assist in training.
Development work The Florida Bahamas Synod works in conjunction with ELCA Disaster Response as well as Lutheran World Federation supporting development work in the communities of Haiti who were devastated by the earthquake in 2010.
Student Scholarships As students are required to pay tuition in order to attend school in Haiti, the Florida Bahamas Synod helps to provide funds for students' education. Students receiving scholarships are recommended by ELH and include students trained various fields.
Congregational Literacy Programs The Florida Bahamas Synod support the work of ELH in their literacy program, teaching people of all ages to read. The goal is to enable congregation members to be able to read and study the bible. The synod provides support for resources and teachers
Women's Leadership Training Women from the Florida Bahamas Synod have met with the women of ELH to assist and support the formation of the Women of Eglise Lutherienne d'Haiti.
Speaker Exchange Pastors and lay people of the Florida Bahamas Synod have gone to Haiti to share in worship and to speak with ELH congregations on behalf of the FB Synod of the ELCA. Within Florida, pastors from ELH have come to our congregations to share as well.
Sojourning Trips Due to the of the fragile infrastructure in Haiti, visiting groups from the FBS are made up of people from throughout the synod [not single congregation trips]. These trips are learning trips with the expectation of advocating for ELH upon return
Together in Mission Grant Program The Florida Bahamas Synod provides a grant program that provides ministry grants for projects proposed by Eglise Lutherienne d'Haiti. These grants provide resources for ministry programs in Haiti prioritized a by ELH, but not possible without funding
