Profile of the companion synod relationship - 3E Northeastern Minnesota Synod / Russia /
Our Role in Global Mission

We facilitate hands-on financial, teaching and spiritual/friendship accompaniment ministry opportunities between Lutheran churches in North America and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria in Russia and promote mutual learning with one another.

Component(s) of our relationship

Friendship Congregation Relationships
Seven churches in our Synod have formal "Friendship Congregation Relationships" with churches in the ELCIR. This is an excellent way to establish mutually supporting relationships and to personalize support.

Mission tours
Pastor Antti and Jane Lepisto have led tours to visit congregations of the Ingrian Lutheran Church, providing an opportunity to visit many of the friendship congregations in Russia and establish life-long faith-based relationships.

Visitors from the ELCIR
Exchange visits have led to strong ties of friendship and have deepened our faiths—blessed experiences for everyone.

Building New Churches
The government is returning church buildings to Lutheran churches with the stipulation that they be rebuilt by a certain date—there simply aren't resources to do that. Churches/individuals in our synod have partnered to help build 3 churches.

Short-term missions, Ural Deanery
Pr David and Stephanie Carlson coordinated mission trips to ELCIR churches in the Ural Deanery in 2005 & 2007, journeys of faith and friendship, sharing in devotions, fellowship, singing, and worship together—a trip is planned for 5/30/11-6/12/11.

Support for Youth Ministry Church Worker Salaries,
Youth ministry and training of leaders is vital for the future of the ELCIR. The youth ministry work of Nadia and Pr Alexei Krongolm in Petrozavodsk and Karelia is a project of our synod, currently supported by several partnering Lutheran churches.

Short term missions - Friendship English Language
We have partnered with East European Mission Network to participate in their Friendship English Language (Bible) Camps in Russia using a biblically-based curriculum to practice English and build relationships with public school youth and teachers.
