Diaconos

The Diaconos program at Camp Kirchenwald is designed for youth groups to custom-plan a week filled with a combination of service opportunities and adventure outings. With the Diaconos staff, you can schedule a week that perfectly fits the needs and abilities of your group. Service sites in the community engage you and your group in physically expressing the ministry of Christ. They also offer the chance to interact with the people you serve and with one another, sharing the good news and growing in spirit to the glory of God. We also recognize the importance of social and spiritual development through group dynamics and encourage you to make adventure/recreation programs part of your diaconos experience. These adventure opportunities will challenge your group to work together and overcome obstacles, while enjoying some of the exciting outdoor activities available.

Christ''s Servants Caring for the Capital

Come to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia and serve others while experiencing the local culture. Work with your choice of area agencies, e.g. Project Crossroads, a housing improvement organization for low-income and elderly of the area, Helping Hands, a thrift store benefiting the needy, Agape Food Pantry, etc. We can help you plan a program of service, worship, bible study and fun activities specific to your group’s interests and needs to enrich your time here or you can bring your own program with you.

Groups can experience the rich tradition of Appalachian bluegrass and old-time musicians at a variety of venues. Or spend your free time enjoying the beauty of God''s creation at the camp or at the adjacent Hungry Mother State Park where swimming, hiking, biking, canoeing or kayaking are available. Additional options include nearby whitewater rafting, biking on former mountain rail trails, horseback riding or hiking the Appalachian Trail.

Harvest of Hope Mission Work Camps

Harvest of Hope provides gleaning and study mission work camps that educate youth and adults about the realities of hunger, its causes and effects. Harvest of Hope combines gleaning (salvaging fresh vegetables and fruits from fields to provide food to hungry people,) activities that help explore hunger issues and worship to build a Christian community of service to help meet the needs of those in our world who live with hunger and poverty. Harvest of Hope provides participants with a basis for an ongoing commitment to responsible living in a hungry world. Designed for youth, young adults and intergenerational groups, weekend and weeklong mission work camps are conducted in the summer and fall at various locations. Interested groups should contact the Society of St. Andrew office early in the year to register for Harvest of Hope.

Society of St. Andrew Gleaning Network

Gleaning is the Biblical practice of hand gathering crops left after harvest. The Gleaning Network coordinates volunteer gleaners, growers, and distribution agencies to provide fresh produce for America''s hungry people. Growers offer their fields and orchards for hand gleaning by volunteers from church, schools, civic and other groups. The salvaged produce is donated to local food banks, shelters, soup kitchens and other agencies for free distribution to hungry children and adults. Tens of thousands of volunteers each year hand pick more than 15 million pounds of food to help relieve hunger in their own communities. The Gleaning Network operates in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and in selected areas of 20 states. Interested groups should contact the Society of St. Andrew office for information about gleaning in their area.
